We cannot depend on someone else’s forge.
A forge was a furnace used to craft and sharpen the weapons and tools of ancient times. Without a forge, weapons became weak and dull. Therefore, when the Philistines warred against Israel, they simply aimed to take away any and all of the forges within the Israelites’ reach. This led them to be dependent on the Philistines to sharpen their tools. On the day of battle, not one soldier with Saul or Jonathan had a weapon in their hands.
Only looking towards others is to establish a dependence on someone else’s fire. Instead, we need to be at the “cutting edge” - to build our relationship with God and dwell in His word, to hear what He is doing and receive his wisdom, to pioneer ahead with courage and break ground while filled with the Holy Spirit. We don’t need to look to others to access the forge. We can keep the fire burning even in our own living rooms.
Depending on someone else’s fire results in us getting counterfeit equipment. David’s choice to leave the armor crafted by the enemy that Saul gives him, and to instead take up the smooth stones crafted in the land where he spent all His time with the Lord, led to the defeat of Goliath and changed the destiny of Israel. His story illustrates the power of forging through a relationship with God rather than depending on the untested works of others.
May we keep the fire burning!
